Thoughts about making a future video on "Meditative Gaming"

Just a quick session of talking to myself about a potential future video on an idea I've had for a while - unwinding my tendency to strip video games (and other things) down to their core elements in order to achieve my goals, thereby limiting the amount of enjoyment i can have with them by "living in them".

@wavebeam@spectra.video I think that the mindset you have makes it so that, even a tiny goal that isn't even meant to be an immediate goal (like paying off your house in Animal Crossing or killing the Ender Dragon), it gets turned into an item in the checklist inside your mind.

Try this: Skyrim and Fallout games have mods which give you an alternate start where you pick a background and basically quickly make your character. A cool thing about these kinds of mods are that some of them don't give you the main quest, essentially making it so that you don't have any goal till you wander around and find someone and take their quest. You location is also randomised based on your character's history in the selection screen so you could end up in the middle of nowhere and are forced to wander around and take in the world. Fallout New Vegas also has a hardcore mode where there's survival mechanics and while those might be annoying to most, I think it might make you intentionally look for buildings where there might be supplies on your way to somewhere else.

Similarly for Minecraft, beta versions did not have the End dimension and no Enderdragon. So beta Minecraft is also a kind of aimless game where you have to 'live' in the world by building your base, growing your crops, etc. I recommend something like Minecraft: Better Than Adventure which builds on the beta builds by polishing them up and adding new features.

But in the end, it's more of a mindset issue than anything. I think when you do play games like Red Dead or GTA, try to engage in the side activities or RDR2's hunting, camping, cooking mechanics.

@basil_disco@dalek.zone I have! I think this conversation is good evidence that I really need to work through exactly what's going on in my head so i can best convey that in a video and how I can make deliberate choices to be more intentional about it in the future!

@wavebeam@spectra.video That's interesting because those kinds of games don't really have a 'checklist' of things to do. Did you try any walking sims like Firewatch? I'm pretty sure they're made for 'taking the scenery in' kind of meditative mindset

@basil_disco@dalek.zone This is an interesting thought! I do like Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, and Minecraft! But those are definitely games I've turned on "Checklist mode" for!

I think you'd like more open-ended games like lifesims (Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, etc) or sandboxes like Minecraft because they're the antithesis to a 'Checklist mode' game. They also have a lot of downtime or quiet moments for you to go around and notice things or just reflect on your own life.
